Fred the Deaf Suitcase
Hi there, I'm Fred the Deaf suitcase!
On my travels, I would like to meet as many people as possible. If I can, I would like to teach hearing people how to communicate effectively with Deaf people with some really simple tips:
- Keep eye contact with the Deaf person as they may be trying to lip read
- Gesturing and pointing at things will help the Deaf person to get a better idea of what you are trying to say
- Write things down, the shorter the better
- Draw: if it is something that you can draw like maps or directions – go for it!
I can't wait to start travelling, especially because each country has a different sign language! This means that I can learn to communicate with Deaf people from around the world.
You may be thinking that it will be difficult for me to communicate with hearing people, but don't worry. Because I use sign language – I am used to gesturing and pointing – so normally language is not a barrier for me. Most of my friends learned to sign at www.terptree.co.uk.
Doing these things will really help make my travels easier and also help other Deaf people that are travelling!
